:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Brenda Telford -- Historical fiction inspired by the Wasbies! : It was 1945 in Burma when five young women in their early twenties joined the Wasbies – Women’s Auxiliary Service (Burma) – where they were sent to the front lines of the fighting in their mobile canteen trucks, bringing good cheer, smiling faces, gallons of tea plus sandwiches and cakes to the Allies. The soldiers were grateful for the food, but also to the women who did it tough, never complained, always happy to share a smile and a laugh with those men. It took the friends awhile to settle in but with Lucy from Australia and Joy from the United States, the three others from London, they became as close as sisters. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Shelagh -- A compelling and fascinating story : Fresh and intriguing, this dual timeline story introduced me to a type of artwork and a side of the Second World War in Indochina that I knew nothing about. Set partly in late 20th century England and Ireland and partly in 1944 Burma the story depicts massive contrasts in climate and living conditions. Author Kayte Nunn has done a sterling job of showing the horror of war through the eyes of Bea and her fellow members of the Women’s Auxiliary Service (Burma), or Wasbies as they were called. It was truly eye-opening to see young women who had largely come from upper class British families in India slowly transform to the point where they could simply walk past a dead body and get on with their day and could competently feed 500 starving soldiers at the drop of a hat. Add to this a fascinating story involving a stolen netsuke and I found this book very hard to put down. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2021 )

- 5.0 out of 5 stars from OzzieCarole -- Kayte is the master of dual timelines : I absolutely loved this story of friendship that endures decades. I loved all the characters but of course the new friendship which develops between Olivia and Bea is very special. I cried in some parts and for me, if a book brings out your emotions, it’s definitely a good read. I have finished reading this on Remembrance Day 2021 which I found fitting because half of the book is set during WW2. This is only the second book of Kayte Nunn’s that I have read but definitely won’t be my last. ( Reviewed in Australia on November 10, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Thoroughly Enjoyable : I had never read or heard much of the war based in Burma and thoroughly enjoyed this story based on a group of young women who worked in a small caravan type canteen supplying the fighting men in the jungle with small home comforts such as hot cups of tea and a bacon sandwich. Sie beschreibt sehr interessante Themen auf eine angenehm lockere Art, geht durchaus in die Tiefe und man merkt die Recherchearbeit hinter dem Text, ohne dass es einen erschlägt.
